Review of DBM @ i42

CK dBm is a mix of friends that was thrown together a month before i42. The lineup consists of Kos, Vyperpunk, Wich, Nibk and Darken. Expectation's were low due to zero practice, however we have now decided to form as a permanent team. The following is a diary of how the weekend went for dBm.

Thursday

Davros picked me and Ged up at 14:00 after setting off from Somerset at 9:00am. After 4 hours and a smashed up caravan on the m62, we finally picked up Breaky from Pontefract. The mood in the car wasn’t the best <INSERTPHOTO 1> but fortunately traffic to Newbury was light and we finally arrived at 11:00 PM After signing in and setting up the tent and pc’s, we had to play catch up on the drinking as all of CK had been consuming their body weight in alcohol since the afternoon. There was to be no practice games as nibk wasn’t coming till Friday so some mixes and games of HoN and LoL were the order of the night before retiring to our tents / hotels at god knows what time (Tippy passed out before us all due to being Scottish and therefore drinking more than he could handle).

Friday

Due to the heat, I was up at 8:30 am, soon followed by most of the other tent users. Highlight of the morning was the state of Tippy after waking up under his desk. Johny and Wich went to pick Nibk up from Birmingham. The css tournament wasn’t due to start till 7:30 pm so everyone in the box tried to keep themselves occupied, LoL & HoN, bit of deathmatch, drinking & sunbathing the obvious choices.
Nibk finally arrived so we got him set up ASAP and introduced to everyone. We decided to play a practice against CK EVB on de_nuke.
Nibk decided to prove he also cheats on lan, pulling off decent shots including a 5 man on deco! After this we waited for the seeds & groups to be announced.

Group Stages

The groups were released, dBm in Group B with:
-FM Toxic
-eMpathy
-Jersey shore
-Perilous
-PIPEDOWN
-Vicious Malice
-Exclusive
-rag3

After a few cigarettes and a quick team talk to sort out positions, we headed into our 1st game...

CK [dBm] vs Perilous Gaming - De_Dust2

Speedy and his bunch of merry men, good online friends of ours. We literally didnt know what to expect going into this having wins and losses against them in various leagues. We won the knife round and chose CT, letting them to attempt to set the pace. What happened next shocked even us. A late short rush enabled them to get the bomb planted, a full retake ending in 4 usp kills for nibk, shut them down and 1st blood to us. However before we knew it, dBm were 7-0 up, shutting down a Perilous attack before they could execute it. The 1st half ended 12-3 to us and we switched to T. Perilous almost brought themselves some hope, Mick winning a 1v1 against Kos but failed to defuse the bomb in time. This allowed dBm to win the next 3 rounds to win 16-3. Perilous Vo0 said after “You out aimed us simple, we couldn’t get a strat down because you would shut us out. We would get a pick but lose 3 players doing so ”. A mention must also go to Rev who managed to get himself banned from the server for 10 minutes, resulting in a pause.

CK [dBm] 21 - 9 Perilous Gaming

CK [dBm] vs PIPEDOWN - De_Tuscan

This game could have gone either way. A team we knew to be well drilled with good players. Losing the knife round we started T side and set about trying to gain entry into the bomb sites. Well the 1st half was tight but we were outaiming them and using smokes to cut off their awper enabling us to get bomb plant after bomb plant. The 1st half ended 8-7 in dBm’s favour. Their preparation became apparent in the 2nd half, easily gaining entry onto A round after round.
Eventually PIPEDOWN manage to get over the line, prompting “jesus u had us scared” “thank fuck we won” from a team pushing for a top 25 finish.

CK [dBm] 13 - 17 PIPEDOWN

CK [dBm] vs Vicious Malice - De_Inferno

This game was a bit awkward. We knew they were good and friends of ours but we got schooled as ct, myself going 0-7 on a map we’re normally comfortable with. We managed to scrape 10 rounds at the end but changes on this map was needed for the knockout bracket on Saturday. Other surprise results were also making the middle of the groups table very tight, round difference soon to come into play.

CK [dBm] 10 - 20 Vicious Malice

CK [dBm] vs Exclusive - De_Contra

This game was a simple case of ‘Kill paynt, the previous top10 lan finisher = round won’. May sound a bit harsh after winning knives and opting CT this became the case. Paynt was showing his aim but we were able to shut them out most rounds, B site the target of most T attacks. After the change over, dBm pretty much followed suit, attacking B site round after round and gaining entry easily thanks to some sick entry picks. Darken took this as his cue to piss everyone off and play without his headset, receiving some comments about being “a stupid welsh cunt” from Kos. We had done well to pick ourselves up after the inferno loss and spirits were high as the beer started flowing.

CK [dBm] 18 - 12 Exclusive
Saturday #Day 2

CK [dBm] vs Jersey Shore - De_Train

Realistically this was 1 of 3 games we were expecting to struggle with. Darken “I FUCKING HATE TRAIN!” summed up the feelings at 10:00 am in the morning against CAL #1 Avash and his men. We actually managed to win pistols as CT but our lack of practice showed in this game. Darken’s banter kept us going though and we managed 9 rounds at the end.

CK [dBm] 9 - 21 Jersey Shore

CK [dBm] vs raG3 - De_Season

Quite an easy game against very nice opponent  who were at lan for the fun and not keeness. We won CT side and locked them out round after round, winning 15-0. We wrapped the pistol round up and both teams proceeded to buy lol guns for the rest of the game, all 10 of us in high spirits.

CK [dBm] 28 - 2 raG3

CK [dBm] vs eMpathy - De_Nuke

Not much to say about this game, eventual 5-6th place finishers eMpathy beat us easily, both teams just relaxing and having some banter for 30 rounds.

CK [dBm] 7 - 23 eMpathy

CK [dBm] vs FM Toxic - De_Dust2

Our final game of the group the team who went on to win the competition and turned out to be quite funny. Highlight of the game was Darken when we won our 1st round “brb posting on facebook that we got a round against virgins” We actually managed to get some lol shots and Vy decided he’s good with the awp. 20 people screaming “CY@ RICH!” made this defeat enjoyable lol.

CK [dBm] 8 - 22 FM Toxic

fragmasters TOXIC (2) 8 8/0/0 194/46/148 24

We eventually finished 5th in Group B, entering us into the Lower Bracket for Saturday evening.

Lower Bracket Knock Out

CK [dBm] vs Rasta.MMmix - De_Inferno

After a delay due to server issues, our game got started. We opted for CT after winning knives and proceeded to smash the 1st half 14-1, shutting out any attacks. It should be noted though that 1 of their players was seriously struggling with the heat on G2. We won the pistol and following round as T to book our place in the next round, sending these lovely men into the lower bracket.

CK [dBm] 16 - 1 Rasta.MMmix

CK [dBm] vs Furious. - De_Season

A bit of dribble and some arguing knocked us off our game here. Myself struggling to hold A at times. Regular players in #KGL (Lovers of unused maps), Furious took full advantage of  this attempting to pull us off sites with fakes, eventually winning the 1st half 8-7 against us. Switching to the harder side as T, we needed to start firing on all cylinders again and call on the frag makers in the team. By now the CK teams had finished their games for the night and gathered round to cheer us on and give encouragment. Despite this we were staring at defeat, down 14-12. Enter the CK fight back... Making it 13-14 everybody seemed fired up once again, taking it to 15-14 in our favour. A well executed split on A won us the final round and game. The whole of the CK box going mental. Alcohol flowed that night taking us through to our next game at 11:00 AM Sunday. What we thought had been the game and come back of lan, the following day...

CK [dBm] 16 - 14 Furious

The evening antics continued through Saturday night starting with a mass game of football under the floodlights of Berkshire Stand. Watching 20 unfit nerds waddle round must have been a sight to behold for spectators. Darken and JC entertained the group for the evening on the balcony with some epic stories and welsh banter. An early night for the games the next morning? No chance, lan is about socialising not being keen.

Sunday #Day 3

CK [dBm] vs Diabulus Penguins - De_Train

“How do you solve a problem like Diabulus?” I was asking myself the next morning while enjoying a coffee and smoke on the balcony. “Outaim them, play our skin out” was Wich’s answer.
Well we got off to a good start by winning knives opting to take on CT side. We won pistols and the following eco rounds but we were shocked find almost all of their team awping. Not the best when you all have rifles. We managed to adapt, myself manging to control mid and their main picking awper to drop my 1st 20 bomb on lan :p 10-5 to us 1st half.
Now losing pistols as T is damaging enough, but to then go and start losing round after round is even worse. The Penguins were well drilled, happy to play defensive at long range with awps. We needed to find their weaknesses and exploit them. This is were deciding to get Wich to call as opposed to me the week before lan was a good call if I may say so myself. Going 0-8 down, we suddenly switched on, Darken and Wich pulling off some smart play to get behind the CT’s to start clawing rounds back. Using smokes efficiently now and well placed flashes from Vy, allowed me to get into positions to continually pick their awper, taking over A site. We eventually got round #6 and again, the CK Box went mental feeling like we had won lan! Man hugs ensued.

CK [dBm] 16 - 13 Diabulus Penguins

CK [dBm] vs #Think - De_Nuke (Upper Bracket Final)

No one literally turned up for this match, the previous game probably draining all our energy. The eventual winners of the lower bracket won knives and chose the easier CT. Despite our efforts we couldn’t break them down, only gaining 1 round as T :( A few mistakes started creaping such as clearing out ramp and lower when “guys who left the bomb in lobby?”. Needless to say we lost the CT pistol and that was game over.

CK [dBm] 1 - 16 #Think

CK [dBm] vs #T-Bagged - De_Dust2

At this point fellow CK team UVN had been knocked out the tournament, meaning this game was now irrelevant as we were hoping for an all CK final. Shotguns, autosnipers and compacts came out in full force for this game. All of the team was thinking about was food, alcohol and 1 more night of fun. No disrespect to the other game, they probably would have won no matter what mind set we were in. But we had achieved our target of going far in the lower bracket and top CK team this lan.

CK [dBm] 3 - 16 #T-Bagged

CK dBm - 36th (3rd Lower Bracket)

Monday #Day 4

So it was time to pack down, people leaving at different times via different transport. There was talk of taking some teams to Epic Lan #6 and maybe even an appearance at #i43. The journey back was uneventful, Breaky winning the touchscreen monitor in the raffle. Karma perhaps for his team being shit at lan? All in all it was personally 1 of the best weekends I’ve had in years.

Players report -Written by Wich [Voted MVP @ LAN]

nibk - maybe the most unlucky player of this lan, pretty much karma for half the crap he pulls online, however when nades were not bouncing off fluke walls or being wasda's to death, he was consistent and if was left to his own devices and hold bomb sites on his own and 90% of the time do so with amazing success

Vyperpunk - this man was truly an anchor to this LAN, constant with back up always was where he was needed and followed strats to a tee, even if it led to his death now and he did it with a smile!!

Cody/Darken - consistently made us smile throughout this LAN a true asset to our team and kept moral high with his cheeky welsh accent! ill admit i had doubts about Cody's ability coming into LAN but all of this is gone, he played amazingly well and out did all my and the teams expectations and i would happily have him in any team i play in.

Kos - this man smashed so many domes, always kept his head in the game and if we had to look at anyone to pull us out of a rut this would be your man! did a credit to himself and to CK and dbm, kos the destroyer of dreams truly showed up and smashed dreams back to there homes!

Wich (written by Kos) - not much to say, aimed superbly, fragged, clutched, drank, called, out stratted more prepared teams (U MAD BRO?) The reason (except Ged) I’ll never leave CK, this man has matured into a top cs player.

Shoutouts to Perilous and MOD, nice meeting you guys and having a drink. Also thanks to Pasta for proof reading this dribble.  cu@i44 :)
